Superstar Rapper, Model, and Entrepreneur NIcki Minaj is known for surprising stunts which leave audiences amazed but this time she is stunning the world in a different way. Recently, she took to Twitter an announced she would help struggling college students pay off their tuition if they could present report cards with A’s.
A fan sent Nicki a meme jokingly asking her to help her pay her remaining college fees. Nicki didn’t find it funny. As a matter of fact, she thought it was a great idea. She replied to the young lady’s tweet, “Show me straight A’s that I can verify w/ur school and I’ll pay it. Who wants to join THAT contest?!?! Dead serious. Shld I set it up?”
Immediately, college students from all over the world began replying, hoping she would select them to receive her ‘twittership’.
Reports began surfacing that Minaj was just joking until students started seeing their balance with their college cleared a day or two later. The rapper reportedly agreed to cover remaining expenses for 20 college students who presented her with documents proving their grades were accurate. One of those students was Artavion Le’Shawn Cook from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Cook, graduated from Ringgold High School in Ringgold, Louisiana (near Shreveport). He was #3 in his class with 30 college credits prior to going to college. At ULL he is studying Kinesiology.
While Cook is a big fan of the rapper he was shocked that she responded to his message on Twitter. “I didn’t expect her to respond because she follows so many people. It’s harder for her to see everyone’s plea for help because she had so many people asking. I didn’t expect her to respond to me,” he said about his favorite artist.
Cook’s mother, Lerenda Love-Dockery, is actually in school as well. She attends Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, AK. Dockery says she listens to Gospel Music and hadn’t really paid much attention to Nicki Minaj or any of the rappers that her son listens to but Minaj’s kindness towards college students has made her pay more attention to her music. “She has earned my respect as a person. It is very honorable for her to use her celebrity in such a positive way,” said Dockery.
“I was working in the Collections Department at Magnolia Regional Medical Center and one day I was called into the office informing me that they were outsourcing my position. All I could think about was getting my son through school. I cried for a week because I didn’t want to tell my child that he had to choose another school that I could afford. But every time I tried to get discouraged I could hear God say all you have to do is have faith the size of a mustard seed. I am a tithe payer. I give God his 10 percent before I pay my light bill so I knew that God would make away for us”.
Dockery raised three kids as a single mother but she was married two years ago. “I have a wonderful husband now who has stepped in and has done a great job being a father to my kids. He is the only one working and has to pay house note, car note, bills and also take care of his own son. My kids have always depended on me and I have always had to work my tail off to make sure I provide for them. My son loves ULL and I’m going to keep pushing until I get him through school. Nicki paying his balance off this semester has really helped me,” she said.
Artavion doesn’t just like Nicki Minaj because she paid off his tuition. He has been a die hard fan of hers for years. “I love everything about Nicki. I love how she’s so unapologetic. She’s such a boss when it comes to how she carries herself. She demands men to respect her,” he said. “She’s always encouraged her fans to stay in school because she couldn’t afford to go to school. I also love that she’s a successful female rapper in a male driven industry.” He says because she is so successful in the Pop Community she is sometimes discredited as a great lyricist but the world should know she is a ‘boss’.
While some students were awarded $500. Others only needed books paid off. A few of the students needed large sums of money and they were surprised Minaj paid their balances off. “I owed my school $1,172.95 because Louisiana recently cut our TOPS scholarships, which actually has caused a lot of students to have to withdraw from school. So, I was honored to have received the notification from her that she would pay for my school. I could not register for classes for next semester until balance was paid,” said Artavion.
Black Boot Media has received confirmation through the University of Louisiana at Lafayette that Artavion Cook’s balance of $1,172.95 has been cleared. Minaj announced on Twitter that she may to do it all again in a month.
